The title characters of the game, around which not only the plot, but also the gameplay of Concrete Genie is built. And although I realize that it is rather unlikely that any of the artists working on Concrete Genie will have Łauma, Borka and Sambor in their hands, or Kościsko, the whole game I couldn’t get over the impression that the genies are incredibly similar to the fantastic creatures from the works of the Polish comic book artist.Įxactly, genies. However, I associated them with something else, namely with the work of Karol “KaErEl” Kalinowski. In turn, the appearance of ghosts created by Ash is indeed reminiscent of the works of Burton or the works of the Muppet father. As the authors of the game admit, in order to obtain a characteristic effect, the characters were animated by hand, without the use of motion capture technology. And not only in appearance, but also in terms of movement. Human heroes are deceptively similar to dolls from stop-motion animations like Kubo and two strings. Indeed, if you know Coraline, Halloween Town or the Dark Crystal, it’s hard not to notice some similarities in terms of character appearance, colors, genie design, and even the color palette used. The creators did not hide their inspiration from the film achievements of Laika studio, as well as Tim Burton and Jim Henson. From that moment on, Ash starts painting on the walls of the buildings again, this time for a higher purpose.Īn element that attracts attention from the first contact with the game is the original, extremely eye-catching visuals of Concrete Genie. The ghost assigns the boy the task of cleaning the city from the black and purple substance covering the port area with the help of a magic brush. There, Ash meets Luna – the first genie he draws to come to life. The persecutors tear off and throw away some pages from the notebook with drawings, and the boy himself is locked in a cable car going to the (allegedly haunted) lighthouse. One of the meetings with the troubled youth roaming the deserted streets turns out to be particularly fateful for Ash. He spends his time filling the pages of his sketchbook with images of fantastic creatures and running away from hooligans that haunt him. Currently, the protagonist is one of the last inhabitants of a port town that fell into decline due to an ecological disaster. The main character of Concrete Geniethere is Ash – a boy with an artistic flair, who from an early age decorated the streets and pavements of his hometown – Denski with drawings. Pixelopus, owned by Sony, made sure that their game was an interesting entertainment with a message for the younger and relaxing fun for older audiences. Concrete Genie promises a wonderful, colorful adventure with creating magical murals.

My favorite thing about this comforting soup… John Fremont's overly glowing reports of the area were published shortly after his expedition. That happened in 1850 under the leadership of Howard Stansbury (Stansbury discovered and named the Stansbury mountain range and Stansbury island). Fremont led the first scientific expedition to the lake, but with winter coming on, he did not take the time to survey the entire lake. In time, "Timpanogos" was dropped from the maps and its original association with Utah Lake was forgotten. On some maps, the two names were used synonymously. As people came to know of the Great Salt Lake, they interpreted the maps to think that "Timpanogos" referred to the Great Salt Lake. Other cartographers followed his lead and charted Lake Timpanogos as the largest (or larger) lake in the region. It was the larger of the two lakes that appeared on Miera's map. Escalante had been on the shores of Utah Lake, which he named Laguna Timpanogos. As oral reports of their findings made their way to those who did make records, some errors were made. Most of the trappers, however, were illiterate and did not record their discoveries. The most obvious example is a map by Nicolas Sanson dated 1650. However, there are several maps dating all the way back to 1575 that show the Great Salt Lake at the correct latitude and longitude, within an accuracy of only a few degrees. Shortly thereafter, other trappers saw it and walked around it. In 1824, it was observed, apparently independently, by Jim Bridger and Etienne Provost. No European name was given to it at the time, and it was not shown on the map by Bernardo Miera y Pacheco, the cartographer for the expedition. The Great Salt Lake entered written European history through the records of Silvestre Vélez de Escalante, who learned of its existence from the Timpanogos Utes in 1776. One of the local Shoshone tribes, the Western Goshute tribe, referred to the lake as Pi'a-pa, meaning "big water", or Ti'tsa-pa, meaning "bad water". At the time of Salt Lake City's founding, the valley was within the territory of the Northwestern Shoshone however, occupation was seasonal, near streams emptying from canyons into the Salt Lake Valley. The Shoshone, Ute, and Paiute have lived near the Great Salt Lake for thousands of years. Stansbury's 1852 map of the Great Salt Lake and adjacent country in the Utah Territory It has been called "America's Dead Sea" and provides a habitat for millions of native birds, brine shrimp, shorebirds, and waterfowl, including the largest staging population of Wilson's phalarope in the world. This density causes swimming in the lake to feel similar to floating. Since the lake has no outlet besides evaporation, these minerals accumulate and give the lake high salinity (far saltier than seawater) and density. Its three major tributaries, the Jordan, Weber, and Bear rivers together deposit around 1.1 million tons of minerals in the lake per year. In 2021, after years of sustained drought and increased water diversion upstream of the lake, it fell to its lowest recorded area at 950 square miles (2,460 km²), falling below the previous low set in 1963. In the 1980s, it reached a historic high of 3,300 square miles (8,500 km 2), and the West Desert Pumping Project was established to mitigate flooding by pumping water from the lake into the nearby desert. The area of the lake can fluctuate substantially due to its low average depth of 16 feet (4.9 m). It is a remnant of Lake Bonneville, a prehistoric body of water that covered much of western Utah. state of Utah and has a substantial impact upon the local climate, particularly through lake-effect snow. The Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere and the eighth-largest terminal lake in the world. Forget your WI-FI password? She dropped out of school after second grade and was homeschooled due to her alleged illness. Gypsy was confined to a wheelchair after that, despite the fact that she was healthy enough to walk on her own on several occasions. Gypsy was 7 or 8 years old when she was involved in a minor bike accident while riding on her grandfather’s bike. Gypsy, she claimed, had the mental capacity of a 7-year-old due to brain damage caused by her premature birth. Her parents divorced shortly before she was born.ĭee Dee claimed that her daughter Gypsy Rose had leukemia, asthma, muscular dystrophy, and a number of other chronic illnesses. Her birthplace is in the American state of Louisiana. She was born to Rod Blanchard, a father, and Dee Dee Blanchard, a mother. On July 1, 1991, Gypsy Rose Blanchard was born. She plotted her mother’s murder with her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, whom she met online. Mommy Dead and Dearest is available to watch on Sky True Crime.Gypsy Rose Blanchard is a convicted American murderer who murdered her own mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, in July 2015. Mommy Dead and Dearest tells the tragic story with interviews with Gypsy, family members and friends, medical records, home videos and text messages, to provide the full picture of the events which led to Dee Dee’s murder. In July 2015, the abuse Gypsy Rose experienced came to light, and she accepted a plea bargain of second degree murder with a 10 year prison sentence.Įarlier this year, Godejohn was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. While it was initially theorised that Gypsy Rose was kidnapped, her relationship with Godejohn was soon discovered, and after the pair were traced via their IP address, they surrendered. However, he stabbed Dee Dee to death, before having sex with Gypsy Rose and fleeing to Wisconsin. She claims that she didn’t think Nicholas would carry out the act. In June 2015, Godejohn came to the Blanchard house while Dee Dee was asleep, with Gypsy Rose allegedly giving him a knife, gloves and duct tape before she hid in a bathroom. They also began planning Dee Dee’s murder. In 2013, Gypsy Rose organised for Nicholas to visit her home in Springfield, Missouri, when they began their sexual relationship. The pair grew close, with Gypsy Rose later telling a neighbour that they were considering eloping. And in 2012, Gypsy Rose – then 21 – met Nicholas Godejohn on the internet. She received trips to Disney World, backstage passes to concerts and media attention, with Habitat for Humanity even building the Blanchards as home with a wheelchair ramp and a hot tub.ĭee Dee was portrayed as a loving caretaker, but behind the scenes, she would physically abuse her daughter to control her.Īccording to the documentary, she would hold Gypsy Rose’s hand at all times, and would squeeze it hard if she said anything that suggested she was not as sick as her mother claimed.Īs Gypsy Rose grew older, a number of doctors found that she tested negative for muscular dystrophy and that she could indeed walk. DeeDee would deliberately keep Gypsy sick as part of her Munchausen by Proxy Forest Service (USFS) lands within three miles of Boundary Waters. In 2012, Twin Metals requested renewals for two mineral leases to mine for copper and nickel on U.S. 11 The company has also been implicated in a number of bribery and corruption scandals in its home country, including allegations involving a high-ranking Chilean cabinet minister and a questionable $10-million-dollar loan to the daughter-in-law of the Chilean president. Since 2016, Twin Metals has spent nearly $1 million lobbying the Trump administration in order to gain access to public lands near Boundary Waters. President Donald Trump’s daughter and son-in-law rent their $5.5 million Washington, D.C., mansion from Luksic for $15,000 a month-a relationship that raises conflict of interest questions. One of those threats comes from Twin Metals Minnesota, a subsidiary of Antofagasta PLC, a Chilean mining company owned by billionaire Andrόnico Luksic, who is also Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner’s landlord. While Boundary Waters is protected from development within its borders, it remains vulnerable to threats in the watershed in which it lies. 8 Home to gray wolves, black bears, and moose-as well as fish such as largemouth bass and sturgeon-Boundary Waters has more than 1,200 miles of canoe routes, 12 hiking trails, and more than 2,000 designated campsites, attracting about 155,000 visitors annually-more than any other U.S. 7 It stretches nearly 200 miles along the U.S.-Canada border and is contiguous with Canada’s Quetico Provincial Park, which is also managed as a wilderness area. Covering more than 1 million acres, Boundary Waters is the largest wilderness area east of the Rocky Mountains and north of the Everglades. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, one of the country’s greatest natural marvels, is located within the Superior National Forest in Minnesota. Threatening the country’s most visited wilderness area The administration’s brazen disregard for transparency, science, and process in the Boundary Waters issue may ultimately be its undoing, but until the courts weigh in, this incredible wilderness system remains at serious risk of irrevocable damage from the sulfide-ore mining at its doorstep. 5 The average success rate of previous administrations in such cases is 70 percent. 4 This unsound approach to decision-making has been recognized as such in court, where the Trump administration has only a 6 percent success rate on cases related to the Administrative Procedure Act, which governs the way agencies develop and issue regulations. The Boundary Waters case is emblematic of the Trump administration’s modus operandi: bypass the regulatory process by shortcutting scientific assessment, ignoring local opposition, and bending the law. coastline to rolling back protections for national monuments where coal, oil, and uranium companies have expressed interest, the Trump administration’s energy dominance agenda has threatened public lands across multiple fronts. From proposing oil and gas drilling off nearly every U.S. McCollum and Secretary Perdue highlights the Trump administration’s efforts to remove protections from the wilderness’s watershed and its broader assault on public lands and waters on behalf of extractive industries. McCollum maintained that by stopping the study, he had “started a roller coaster of events that will lead to, possibly, the destruction of these pristine waters.” 2 “Twenty months of collecting public input, 20 months of science-based assessment, and all you released was a one-page press release,” objected McCollum, calling the press release “completely inadequate.” Previously, during a 2017 Interior-Environment appropriations hearing, Perdue promised McCollum that a thorough two-year study would be conducted and completed. 1 The study was canceled 20 months into the 24-month review. The congresswoman lambasted Perdue for the last-minute cancelation of a two-year study meant to determine if mining should be allowed on the doorstep of Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the nation’s most visited wilderness area. Betty McCollum (D-MN) faced off against Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue during a hearing of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee. One scientist I spoke to remarked that it was “absolutely extraordinary that a scientific journal like Nature would hold on to an article to wait for the opening day of a movie”. The timing was not a coincidence – and this didn’t go unnoticed. The results were reported in Nature on June 10 – one day after the Jurassic Park premiere and one day before its release in cinemas across the United States. It is during this time that Jurassic Park’s influence is most evident.Īs well as being the year that the film was released, 1993 also marked a turning point in the world of ancient DNA research: a team of researchers extracted and sequenced DNA from a 125-130m-year-old ancient weevil in Lebanese amber. Scientists call it the “Wild West” and even “the Jurassic Park phase”. It was in the 1990s that the feverish search for the most ancient DNA from the most iconic fossils began. ILM/Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment Dinosaurs were always a frequent feature of museums, but breaking open perfectly preserved bones to discover what was inside was a novelty. Its beginnings tell a story of science, speculation, hope, and hype – and Michael Crichton, the author of the original Jurassic Park novel, was quick to pick this up. Hope and hypeĪncient DNA research walks a fine line between science and science fiction, something stressed by its short but sensational history. I’ve spent the past year interviewing scientists about the history of ancient DNA research and the effects of Jurassic Park on their work as part of my doctoral degree. In the wake of the 1993 Jurassic Park film, scientists who have anything – or even nothing – to do with palaeontology or molecular biology are almost always asked the same question: “Can we resurrect a dinosaur?” The answer is always an emphatic no.īut to some extent, Jurassic Park did actually drive and develop the science and technology of ancient DNA research. Science has apparently evolved too: the genetically-engineered dinosaurs are to take a secondary role to a new star of the show, a genetically-engineered hybrid, worryingly named Indominus Rex. Two decades on and Jurassic Park has morphed into Jurassic World, the one and only dinosaur theme park. While locking out your elbows may ease the tension on your triceps for a split second, elbow extension is the primary triceps function. Many people avoid locking out their elbows during the ring triceps extension and wall tricep extensions because they believe that it takes tension off the target muscles. While it’s fine to use external resistance if your elbows can handle it, most calisthenics athletes prefer to save the really heavy lifting for their compound exercises. Do you really want to be putting even more force through your joints, given that you’re already strong?Īfter all, you can train your triceps heavily with weighted compound movements like push-ups and bench presses. Ring triceps extensions place a lot of torque through the elbows as it is. If you can already smash out sets of 15-20 reps with your rings on the lowest setting, then it might be time to add external resistance.īut before you put on that weighted vest, ask yourself the following question: Do you actually need to do weighted ring tricep extensions? In other words, it’s better to use a more extensive range of motion than it is to use a lower ring height (which is to say a higher percentage of your body weight). Increase the height of the rings until you can successfully lower your head under the rings with nothing other than the strength of your triceps. This simple-to-implement yet challenging-to-execute modification will dramatically increase the stretch that the long head of your triceps gets put under.īut if your triceps aren’t strong enough to handle the increased range of motion, then how are you meant to train the long head? In the ring tricep extension, you can place your shoulders into flexion by lowering your head under the rings. The lack of shoulder flexion and extension is the reason why plank tricep extensions alone aren’t enough for maximizing your triceps development. This means that in order to work the long head optimally, you need to combine elbow extension (the primary function of every tricep head) with shoulder flexion. Unlike the lateral and medial heads of the triceps, the long head crosses the shoulder joint. The long head of the triceps is the biggest muscle in the triceps and is therefore crucial for maximizing your upper arm development. Again, this is because you’re lifting more of your body weight when your feet are further behind your torso. Keeping your feet closer to the rings makes the movement easier, whereas moving your feet further away from the rings makes the exercise harder. In addition to changing the ring height, you can modify your foot position to increase the difficulty of the exercise. Increasing the height of the rings, on the other hand, makes the movement easier because you’re using a lower percentage of your body weight for resistance. Lowering the height of the rings and thereby performing an extension with your body in a more vertical position makes the exercise tougher on your triceps because you’re using a larger percentage of your body weight as resistance. You’ll also learn how to make ring extensions easier if you’re just starting out with calisthenics. The modifications below will help you to keep progressing once regular ring extensions become too easy. Tricep ring extensions are a tough tricep calisthenics exercise because the movement makes you lift a large percentage of your body weight with nothing other than your triceps. Flex your triceps forcefully at the top of the rep as your elbows reach full extension.Press the palms of your hands into the rings and flex your triceps to push yourself back up.Optionally lower your head under the rings to further increase the triceps stretch.Keep going until you feel an intense stretch in your triceps (most likely when your biceps press up against the tops of your forearms).Lower your head toward the rings by bending your elbows. The further your feet are away from the rings, the harder the exercise will be. Shuffle your feet back and keep them around hip-width apart.Tighten your core and maintain a hollow body position in which your upper back is slightly rounded. Grab the rings with a pronated grip and tuck your elbows in slightly. |
